Supporting Myanmar women’s participation in elections and democracy

Today--International Women’s Day--is a great opportunity to reflect on the situation of women’s political participation in Myanmar. In a country where women make up 52 percent of the population, women only account for approximately 10 percent of the overall MPs in both the national and regional legislatures. Women face many constraints when it comes to political participation in Myanmar: unequal access to decision-making, unequal access to knowledge and financial resources, limited opportunities within political party structures and the threat of violence and discrimination, among others.
